Synaptics released new drivers version (17.0.19) which compatible with Windows 8/7/XP/ and Windows Vista. This driver package also support both 32-bit and 64-bit. Before we proceed with the installation ,Synaptic does ask users to check from the manufacturer website first, example if you have a HP notebook, you can check if HP provide Windows 8 drivers for your synaptic touchpad. Ssynaptic released generic drivers which may result in the loss of OEM-costumized Synaptic Pointing device functionality. So, it is strongly recommend to set a restore point which is a quick way to rollback to the previous driver you already have.

This is because some models do have variant, means if you own a Acer 4623 (example), you may see Acer provide 2 downloads for ALPS ans Synaptic touchpad. So we can say Acer 4623 Variant 1 uses Synaptic and the other variant uses ALPS.
